The final stages of official acceptance as an underwater preserve is now underway. A celebration is in order, so stay tuned!
(Update 4/14/08) The GTBUP Proposal was submitted Sept. 2006 and has passed the Legislative Service Bureau review! The next step was the Public Hearing which was scheduled for June 28th at 7 p.m. at the NMC Maritime Academy, Room 112. No opposing comments were presented, only supportive comments! The GTBUPC Council meeting soon followed to follow up on items preparing for the upcoming Summit. Special Guest was Tom Graf, MDEQ Land & Water Permits Division. However, since the MDEQ didn't recieve any formal written notice from the Lansing State Journay (Newspaper), the process now has to be repeated again, which will delay the process another 2-4 months! Next Public Hearing was scheduled for September 11th, 2007. in Traverse City at the Maritime Academy. A few individuals showed up with no opposing comments.
March 19th, 2008: Everything was released to JCAR where it needed to go through 15 Legislation session days (House and Senate). The process is nearing completion and the GTBUP is within 5 weeks of becoming "Officially" the 12th Underwater Preserve in Michigan.
